Samoa Air was founded by Chris Langton in 2012. This small airline operates scheduled flights between the domestic islands of Upolu and Savai’i. They gained global press coverage by becoming the first airline in the world to charge customers by body weight plus luggage weight. The class project was to re-brand an existing airline. After researching, I discovered that many visitors found it difficult to get accommodations in Samoa. The research led me to branch Samoa Air into having a sub brand as Samoa Hotel.
The concept for the re-brand came from studying Samoan culture. The teuila is their national flower. It is at the core of their cultural pride, making it fitting to integrate into the logo for their national airline. The teuila, or red ginger flower, marked the dominant brand color as red. Pattern is very present in their culture anywhere from their tattoos to their pottery. This was used as secondary graphics. Samoa Hotel’s brand color is a canary yellow based on the colors of their food, sunsets and clothing.
